David Micheal Schweiger

“My approach to painting is characterized by lifelong learning and experimentation. As someone who got a late start, the most important thing I learned is never to say ‘I could never do that!’ You cannot know unless you try.”

Dave Schweiger

Dave Schweiger, Ph.D., is a visual artist based in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. His creative journey began in a high school drafting class and continued through painting workshops, independent experimentation, and deep visual study of artists from around the world. Though formally trained in other disciplines, Dave’s artistic education has been shaped by curiosity, collaboration, and the courage to explore. Before turning to art full-time, Dave had a dynamic career as a business school professor and international consultant, traveling extensively across more than 70 countries and all seven continents. These global experiences—both natural and cultural—left a lasting imprint on how he sees the world and how he now interprets it through paint. His work is stylistically eclectic, unified not by a specific technique but by an honest reflection of what he sees and feels. He paints with fluidity across subjects: old architecture, atmospheric landscapes, abstract compositions, and expressive moments of emotional resonance. His evolving style incorporates elements of impressionism, realism, and abstract expressionism, with a strong undercurrent of spontaneity and structure intertwined. “I simply paint what captures my imagination,” Dave says. That could be a weathered façade in a historic town, a windswept coastline, or a flickering sensation of memory or mood. His paintings invite the viewer to move between the literal and the symbolic, the seen and the felt. Dave’s openness to interdisciplinary work has led to meaningful creative partnerships. A recent highlight was a collaboration with his cousin, poet and metal sculptor Gerald Tuckman, resulting in a mixed-media piece selected for exhibition at the Bennington Museum in Vermont. The work combines a painting embedded in a sculptural metal frame, accompanied by a poem—merging visual, spatial, and verbal storytelling into one cohesive artistic statement. Today, Dave continues to experiment and evolve, drawing from the vastness of his life experience to create art that invites reflection, emotion, and curiosity. Whether painting solo or working collaboratively, he approaches each piece as an opportunity to connect with the world, with others, and with himself.
